Yachting New Zealand – Clean Club and Moanamana

A group looking in rockpools

Yachting New Zealand has established two important environmental projects across its 108 member clubs.

The Clean Club project targets five areas: administration and leadership, waste management, resource conservation, community outreach, and education. The goal is for clubs to earn a Clean Club certification. Some of the creative steps being taken include going paperless, using only tank water, joining local composting programs, recycling old mobile phones, installing grills to keep rubbish out of the sea, and setting up stations for disposing of batteries, expired flares, waste oil, and other items.

Moanamana is an educational programme that links schools and kura, local clubs and communities to work on projects that restore marine ecosystems and help build New Zealand’s Blue Belt. Students have been setting up penguin hotels, paua hatcheries, anemone gardens, and kelp forests. Over time, the Blue Belt network will become like a marine version of Predator Free New Zealand, helping to restore the mana of moana.
