Sport Bay of Plenty – Carbon Reduction Project

With the help from its long-term partner BayTrust and sustainability experts Tadpole, Sport Bay of Plenty is working to reduce its carbon emissions and improve its sustainability practices. They use a carbon calculator to track carbon emissions with the results fed into their annual carbon reduction management plan.

Data from 2020 to 2021 showed the highest source of emissions for the organisation were company cars, followed by staff commuting and electricity. As a result, Sport Bay of Plenty is focussing on three main actions: transitioning leased company vehicles from petrol to hybrid models, encouraging carpooling among staff, and switching to energy efficient lighting in their offices.

As of July 2023, Sport Bay of Plenty has cut its carbon emissions by 28% compared to the levels in Financial Year 2021. With 92% of staff agreeing that sustainability should be a major focus, the organisation is well placed to explore new ways to further improve its environmental impact.
