Restoring Rosedale Park
North Harbour Hockey’s Te Hōnonga a Iwi — Restoring Rosedale Park project is pioneering sustainability in sports and building their own resilience. The goal is to transform 10,000 square metres of land into a sustainable system that aims for a climate-positive, carbon-negative future. The area, previously littered and overrun with weeds, has seen significant improvements with the planting of 8,000 native trees and cover crops, and efforts to control pests and support bees. This is the first large-scale environmental restoration project led by a sports organisation in New Zealand.
The project has fostered 46 diverse partnerships with community groups, researchers, and volunteers, creating value, strengthening supply chains, and connecting the community with the environment. It has also generated revenue through chemical-free composting. North Harbour Hockey is making substantial progress toward its carbon-reduction goals, demonstrating a strong commitment to a sustainable future.
