Kia Hīanga
Kia Hīanga, Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa Play Plan 2022-2025 sets out Sport NZ's bicultural vision for play in Aotearoa New Zealand, with the focus over 2022-2025 on play for tamariki 5–12 years of age in a bicultural context.
Kia Hīanga includes a series of actions that Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa has committed to, to improve the quality of experiences, opportunities and support for play and further develop the Aotearoa Play System.
Sport NZ believes a strong bicultural foundation is critical to Aotearoa New Zealand's national identity and wellbeing, therefore Kia Hīanga uses Māui Hīanga as the foundational framework to give shape, reason and rationale to our commitments and actions.
Kia Hīanga links strongly to Te Aho, Sport NZ Māori Activation Plan. Through this connection, we will join the journey to continue the restoration, revitalisation, and reclamation of Tākaro, through, with and by tangata whenua at all levels and through a very distinctive cultural pathway.
The name of this plan, Kia Hīanga, is inspired by the role of tamariki in exploring boundaries through play. Hīanga is often associated with the nanakia (tricky), haututū (mischievous), curious, cheeky and fearless nature of play and is reflected in the whakatauākī above. These attitudes and behaviours are inherent in our tamariki and are vital as they learn their place in this world.
Acknowledgements
We would like to acknowledge and thank all those from across Maoridom outside of Sport NZ that have contributed to the development of the plan.
We also give a special thanks to our internal roopu – Rautaki Māori – for their large contribution, particularly naming plan and the whakatoki gifted by Moana-Lee Raihania.
Finally, we recognise the value, efforts and personal knowledge shared to the Play Unit by Nikki Penetito-Hemara, both as a member of the Play Unit and as co-author, and Neavin Broughton for his gift of Maui Hīanga and overall thought leadership. Nga Mihi to you all.
