Healthy Active Learning hui - improving tamariki wellbeing
Take a look at the highlights from the Healthy Active Learning Hui in Lower Hutt from 9 -11 February
Earlier this month, 70 members of the physical activity workforce supporting teachers and schools in the delivery of Healthy Active Learning met for a three-day hui in Lower Hutt.
Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport NZ and the Ministries of Health and Education to improve the wellbeing of tamariki and young people through healthy eating and drinking, and quality physical activity.
Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson was joined by Education Minister Chris Hipkins to address the physical activity workforce. Both Ministers applauded the collaborative and locally-led initiative, which sees regional sports trusts, regional education offices and public health units partnering with one another to jointly engage schools and kura to improve the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi across Aotearoa.
The Healthy Active Learning advisors, community connectors, and regional leads valued the opportunities to share knowledge and strengthen whanaungatanga across the workforce.
“It’s great seeing the impact of change in our teachers and our communities. It’s awesome working with the teachers, going into the classroom environment and seeing how the kids are interacting with each other, and the enjoyment they get during lessons”, said Apanui Heemi, Healthy Active Learning Advisor, Sport Wellington.
Healthy Active Learning is voluntary, at no cost to schools, kura and early learning services. Sport NZ has partnered with regional sports trusts to create healthy and active learning environments and better connections to communities in over 300 schools and kura have been involved to date. Phase two of the initiative will see it reach a further 500 schools and kura in 2022-2024.
