Young and old
Finding out
Learning intention
To understand how active young people are compared to older people and to explore what some sports are doing to keep young people active for longer.
Discussion
We are going to spend a bit of time looking at trends in participation as people get older.
- Do you think there will be a difference between how active young people are compared to older people?
- Why do you think this?
Before we get started let's make sure we understand some words that we will be using in this activity.
- Physical Activity
- Health Intervention
- Aptitude
- Specialisation
- Wellbeing
- Retention
- Quality Experiences
Also, before we get started let's watch Dr Dan Exeter talk about the importance of being physically active. He has got some ideas on why young people may get turned off sport. Listen carefully to what he has to say as it will help us as we start to explore what some sports are doing to keep kids involved in sport.
Step 1: Comparing participation between young and old
Let's look at how active young people are compared to older people. As a class, a group or just by yourself come up with a series of questions you want to explore using the Insights Tool. Remember that the intention of this learning experience is to understand how active young people are compared to older people in Aotearoa New Zealand. If you feel like you still need some coaching in how to use the Insights Tool then the Insights Tool video might give you some more tips for this activity. Otherwise dive in and see what you can find out.
Step 2: Find out how some programmes cater for older people
Sport Bay of Plenty has a programme called "Keep on your Feet" which has a focus on getting older people stronger and improving their balance to reduce the occurrence of falls and increase their confidence in movement.
Watch the videos and look for ways in which the activities seem different to the activities younger people might get involved with.
Once you have viewed the videos then answer the following questions as a class, a group or just by yourself.
- Why do you think the 'Keep on your Feet' programme has been developed?
- What differences do you think it will make?
- What lessons are there for us as we start to design our own activities?
Step 3: Find out how some sports are changing
NZ Rugby has been changing the way it plays rugby at the under 11 and 12 level. Watch the video and listen for the reasons why they have done this and what the response has been to the changes. Once you have viewed the video then answer the following questions as a class, a group or just by yourself.
- Why have they changed the way they play the game?
- What do people think of the changes?
- What differences do you think it will make?
- What lessons are there for us as we start to design our own activities?
NZ Cricket has a focus on getting more girls involved in cricket. Watch the video and look for ways in which the activities seem different to what you may have thought cricket would look like. Once you have viewed the video then answer the following questions as a class, a group or just by yourself.
- Why do you think the Yeah Girls approach has been developed?
- How is it different?
- What differences do you think it will make?
- What lessons are there for us as we start to design our own activities?
