Supporting sector organisations to build capability
The latest sector survey report tells us that a large proportion of the workforce hold roles with organisations that have no formal framework or statement of commitment to Te Tiriti.
- 63% of survey respondents feel that their organisation understands its Tiriti responsibilities.
- 56% feel their organisation makes clear its Tiriti responsibilities.
- 30% say their organisation has a Te Tiriti framework or formal commitment.
- 70% feel their organisation is committed to honouring Te Tiriti responsibilities.
The following resources support organisations to build cultural capability:
Adopt a culturally grounded approach to governance
Sport NZ has partnered with a Māori-centred governance specialist to provide sector organisations with technical advice and guidance on implementing a Māori-centred or bicultural governance framework. This is a new offering for Sport NZ investment partners that have identified a need for cultural capability support in their 2024-2028 Initiative Development Plans.

Take an e-learning course on intercultural capability
This course from the Ministry of Ethnic Communities has four modules focused on:
- understanding what culture is
- impacts culture has on communication and behaviour
- providing tools and methods for improving people's ability to communicate across cultural boundaries.
The programme is interactive and self-directed, meaning you can move through it at your own pace. Each of the four modules builds on the previous one.
