Active recreation toolkit
Resources to help you understand active recreation
Every young person is different and so are the ways they want to move and why. Active recreation gives rangatahi the freedom to be active in ways that are right for them.
Many rangatahi become less active during their teenage years. Our focus is on creating more and better opportunities and experiences, especially for those who are less active.
This toolkit supports organisations to have meaningful conversations about active recreation for rangatahi.
Understanding active recreation
The active recreation domains illustration shows how broad and diverse active recreation can be. It includes different sectors and areas, which we call domains. These domains often connect and overlap.
You'll also find the illustration in this presentation, along with a short video. Use these resources to spark conversations and build a deeper understanding of active recreation within your organisation and the communities you work with.
Advocating for active recreation
Because active recreation is broad and diverse, it can be challenging to define and explain. For example, a young person might say they’re going to a dance class or the gym, rather than describe it as ‘active recreation’. It can sometimes be mistaken for organised sport.
That makes advocating for active recreation more complex, but even small shifts in how we think, talk and act can be life changing for rangatahi.
Let’s work together to create more and better opportunities for rangatahi to be active. That means collaborating across domains to provide access to a diverse range of activities that meet the needs and aspirations of all rangatahi.
