Accident and injury compensation (ACC)
Accident and injury compensation (ACC)
Club management
ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) is New Zealand’s no-fault insurer for injuries caused by accidents. It provides cover for all New Zealanders, including those involved in sport and recreation.
If someone is injured while taking part in your club’s activities, ACC may help with medical costs and lost income.
What ACC covers
ACC provides support for:
- medical treatment for accidental injuries
- rehabilitation services
- up to 80% of lost wages after the first week (if the injury prevents someone from working)
Note: ACC does not cover the first week of lost wages if the injury did not happen at work.
Types of cover for clubs
Sport and leisure cover
This covers injuries to participants during organised sport and recreation activities.
Workplace cover
You must have this if your club employs staff, such as coaches or administrators. It also covers volunteers who work regular hours.
Your responsibilities as a club
If your club has employees or regular volunteers, you must:
- register with ACC
- pay ACC levies on time
- report serious injuries immediately
- keep accurate records of participants and employees
- maintain an incident register
- provide safe return-to-work programmes
- run safety briefings for staff and volunteers
