Sport NZ is governed by a board whose members and chairperson are appointed by the Minister for Sport and Recreation. The Board is supported by the Taumata Māori whose inaugural chairperson is appointed by the Sport NZ Board and members are appointed by the Sport NZ Group Chair, a Māori member of Sport NZ Board and an independent member. Together with our Group leadership team, they set and guide Sport NZ's strategic direction.

Business Groups
Play, Active Recreation and Sport
This business unit provides leadership and support for the sector to ensure more Kiwis, especially tamariki and rangatahi, participate in play, active recreation and sport. Within this business unit we have six teams: play, active recreation, sport development, tamariki, rangatahi and Healthy Active Learning.
Sector Engagement, Marketing and Communications
This business unit aims to develop a system of capable organisations that can deliver world-leading sporting and physical activity outcomes. Within this business unit we have five teams: partnerships, marketing and communications, conferences and business support, business capability and major events.
Strategy, Policy and Investment
Responsible for delivering, monitoring and reporting on Sport NZ’s strategies, and is the lead policy advisor for the Government on all matters relating to play, active recreation and sport. This business unit is responsible for Sport NZ’s ministerial servicing and cross-government relationships, as well as intelligence, integrity, spaces and places and supporting the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand.
Kahui Rautaki Maori
The Kāhui Rautaki Māori team is the cultural capability partner and is primarily focused on three streams of work:
• Te Whakamana i te Tiriti – Giving effect to the Treaty principles of Partnership, Protection and Participation.
• Mauri Tū – Building cultural capability.
• Mauri Ora – Building cultural vitality.
The Kāhui Rautaki Māori team leads the implementation of Te Aho o Ihi Aotearoa, the Maori Activation Plan that includes Māori National Sport Organisations (MNSO), the He Oranga Poutama Programme, MaraeFit Aotearoa, and the Te Ihi Fund.
People and Culture
The People & Culture business unit provides strategic leadership and influence across the Group - driving strategies and creating and delivering products and services that promote a positive workforce and customer (sector) experience. P&C also drive Sport NZ Group’s sector-facing strategy for diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing, by developing and implementing policies, systems and strategies that promote the Group’s strategic objectives.
Corporate Services
The Corporate Services group is responsible for the provision of Finance, IT, Property, Business Support and Risk Management functions across the Sport NZ Group including High Performance Sport NZ.
