Research review suggests benefits outweigh risk of injury in sport - 20 Jan 2014

A review of published scientific literature on the rates of injury in junior football codes in Australia and New Zealand suggest that the benefits of junior sports far outweigh the risks of injury. Dr Tony Carter of SLE Worldwide Australia believes that participation in the football codes is relatively safe compared to other popular organised sports and recreational and daily living activities. Epidemiology of sports-related injuries in children and youth presenting to Canadian emergency departments from 2007-2010 - 23 Dec 2013 (PDF)

Out of a total of 56, 691 reported sports and recreational injuries, soccer accounted for the largest proportion of injuries. Of these, approximately 30% were fractures. The 10 - 14 year age group reported the greatest proportion of injuries in 10 out of the 13 sports analysed. (BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Overuse injuries and burnout in youth sports: a position statement from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine - January 2014 (PDF)

This paper describes several issues related to the development of overuse injury and burnout in youth athletes. By understanding these issues, clinicians will better be able to treat these injuries, educate parents, athletes and coaches, and provide recommendations for injury prevention. Remembrance run to benefit children's trust - 14 Jan 2014

Created as a community remembrance event for the anniversary of the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, the course looks out across Christchurch city and surrounding areas, allowing people to reflect and remember. Keeping them in the game: taking up and dropping out of sport and exercise in Ireland - September 2013 (PDF)

This is the largest study of participation in sport and exercise ever conducted in Ireland. Commissioned by the Irish Sports Council and compiled by ESRI researchers, it provides evidence for policy from three large nationally representative surveys of activity, covering everyone from primary school children to older adults. Will Workplace Challenge make staff fit for business? - 8 Jan 2014

Loughborough researchers have been enlisted to evaluate the impact of a national workplace physical activity and sport challenge that kicked off recently.  £10 million cash boost for Scottish sports clubs - 7 Nov 2013

Scientific study suggests an association between physical doping and brain doping - 13 Jan 2014

Physical doping and brain doping apparently often go hand in hand. A recent European study revealed that people who engage in physical doping often also take drugs for brain doping. This report values the contribution of sport to the English economy as  £20.3 billion, with grassroots sport responsible for over half of this value.
