noun1. a special personal quality or power of an individual making them capable of influencing or inspiring large numbers of people2. a quality inherent in a thing which inspires great enthusiasm and devotion

When you mention the word 'charisma' to New Zealanders they are just as likely to think of a horse as they are to think of a personality trait or personnel attribute.

This month's NZ Coach Mag contains a look at four well-known football managers (Klopp, Ranieri, Mourinho, Ferguson) through the lens of 'charisma'. Such approaches can often end up being more entertaining than informative but it is interesting perhaps to think about charisma as a means rather than an end. If you accept for a moment the two definitions above, and that some coaches are indeed 'charismatic', what does that mean for the athlete/participant, and the coach-participant partnership? What do charismatic coaches do better than other coaches? Can you be a charismatic coach if you not a high performance coach? Conversely, what are the risks of having a charismatic coach? Those questions might make an interesting workshop discussion.Brett Reid, Sport NZ Community Coaching Consultant
