This month's NZ Coach Mag is a bit of a 'grab bag', with a variety of, I hope, interesting stories. We lead off with another great Tech Blog from Jim Dickin, our resident (in the virtual sense) sport-tech guru. The next story is a Scottish Disability Sport video on coaching, learning and leadership. But don't think this isn't relevant for you if you aren't coaching disabled participants, for the principles remain the same (sometimes an oft-heard message resonates more when heard with a new voice). There's also a nice story for coaches about how to help youngsters manage their emotions and expectations when playing sport (and perhaps the follow-up story could be on how youngsters can help coaches manage their emotions and expectations!). Lastly, there is another slightly left-field offering from BrainPickings. Erich Fromm's Six Rules on Listening draw on Fromm's PPK (personal practical knowledge) as a long-time psychologist. "Understanding and loving are inseparable," says Fromm. Now if that sounds a bit, you know, 'soft', then let me recount what someone once said to me about children's sport: 'If you are going to coach children's sport, you better like sport, but you better like children more."
